THE DEFINITION OF VEGANISM

MEMORANDUM OF ASSOCIATION OF THE VEGAN SOCIETY

[The original Vegan Society, founded in November 1944, by Donald Watson.]

“In this Memorandum the word "veganism" denotes a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude —as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of humans, animals and the environment.”

“In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals.”

WHAT IS A VEGETARIAN

The word 'vegetarian' was defined in England, in 1842, as: 'one who abstains from the use as food of flesh, fish and fowl, with or without the addition of eggs and dairy produce'.

I CALL MYSELF LACTO-VEGAN AND, NOT LACTO-VEGETARIAN

Because, vegetarian is a diet, in which one, 'abstains from the use as food of flesh, fish and fowl, with or without the addition of eggs and dairy produce'.

Whereas, veganism is, 'a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude —as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals.'

Which I live up to, '—as far as is possible and practicable—', for me to still be healthy.

I was vegan for 18 years.
I never had cravings.
I never cheated once.

Before, becoming a lacto-vegan, for health reasons.
I now drink cows' milk and eat yoghurt. But, only because I cannot be healthy, on a vegan diet.

I have kept my vegan ideals.
So, I now call myself lacto-vegan.

WHY I BECAME A LACTO-VEGAN

I became a vegetarian, 50 years ago, because I like animals.

I was vegan for 18 years.
I was healthy for the first 17 years.

But, because of the damage to my teeth and health, in the 18th year of my vegan diet, I returned to drinking milk and eating yoghurt, to restore and maintain my health.

I now call myself a lacto-vegan, and not a lacto-vegetarian, because I have still kept the vegan ideal, of not harming animals, 'in as much as it is possible and practicable', for me to be healthy.

DID I DAMAGE MY TEETH AND BECOME UNHEALTHY, ON A VEGAN DIET, BECAUSE I WAS ON A DEFICIENT DIET?

Well. If my vegan diet was so bad.
Why did I take 17 years to find out.

When most people, who try to be vegans, fail within 1 or 2 years.

And, why has merely adding cows' milk, fixed everything that can be fixed.
I will never get back my beautiful teeth.
But, the rest of the damage has been partially or wholly reversed.

VEGAN DIETS ARE EXPERIMENTAL DIETS

Vegan fundamentalists just cannot accept that, vegan diets are experimental diets, that do not work for everyone.
Indeed, do not work for most people.

1: No human society, in history and prehistory, has ever been vegan.
2: No primate has been proven to be a natural vegan.
3: No pro-simian has been proven to be a natural vegan.

So why be surprised if someone gets serious, and sometimes irreversible, deficiency diseases on a vegan diet.

---------------------------------------------------------------
I have been a Vegetarian for 50 years.
I was a Vegan for 18 of those years.
Before going back to cow's milk for health reasons.
---------------------------------------------------------------

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A LACTO-VEGAN AND A LACTO-VEGETARIAN?

Vegetarian is a diet.
Vegan is a lifestyle.

Vegetarian is a diet of not eating animals.
Vegan is a lifestyle of, 'in as much as it is possible and practicable', not exploiting animals in any way.

A lacto-vegetarian diet is a diet of plants and dairy.
Lacto-vegetarians would not eat animals but still, for example, might buy leather shoes.

A lacto-vegan lifestyle is based on the principle of not wanting to harm animals.
So, a lacto-vegan would not buy leather shoes, unless there was no other alternative.

WHAT IS ORGANIC-FOOD?

Organic-food is fertilised with:

1: blood and bone;
2: chicken dung from factory farms;
3: cattle manure from cattle feed lots;
4: dairy waste;
5: sprayed with fish emulsion.

IS ORGANIC-FOOD VEGAN?

Organic-food is definitely not vegan.

People, who deliberately eat organic food, are definitely not vegans.

Because, by buying food that has been grown in blood and bone, chicken dung from factory farms, cattle manure from cattle feed-lots, and sprayed with fish emulsion, organic-vegans are deliberately engaging in the, '. . . exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, . . .'

Organic-vegans are are not vegans because they are not eating in a way that, '. . . promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of humans, animals and the environment.'

Organic-vegans are not vegans because, 'In dietary terms it [Veganism] denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals.'

WHY I WROTE THIS ARTICLE

Because I like animals.
And, so I want to refute the vegan anti-milk propagandists, who are harming people and animals.

Because most people, who try to become vegans, become ex-vegans.
Often due to ill-health caused by their vegan diet.

And, then, because of vegan anti-milk propagandists, teaching people that dairy is as bad as, even worse than, animal-eating, most ex-vegans become animal-eaters again.
And, eat more than 1000 animals.

Instead of becoming lacto-vegans.
And, drinking milk from just 1 cow.

WHAT IS A VEGAN ANTI-MILK PROPAGANDIST?

Vegan anti-milk propagandists falsely claim, milk-drinking is as bad as, if not worse than, animal-eating.

HOW IS VEGAN ANTI-MILK PROPAGANDA HARMFUL FOR ANIMALS?

If you drank 2 to 4 litres of milk per week, for 80 years, you would have drunk 8000 to 16000 litres of milk.

The average Australian dairy cow produces 8000 litres of milk per year. So, 1 average Australian dairy cow, in just 1 or 2 years in a dairy, can supply you a life-time of milk.

But, the average Australian animal-eater, eats more than 1000 animals, and any number of fish.

So, an animal-eater exploits more than 1000 animals in a life-time.
A lacto-vegan exploits 1 cow for 1 or 2 years. And, maybe 1 or 2 calves.

But, vegan propagandists, say that exploiting 1 cow and 1 or 2 calves, is as bad as, or worse than, eating more than 1000 animals.

So, when most vegans become ex-vegans, they become animal-eaters instead of milk-drinkers.
And, so kill more than 1000 animals instead of drinking from 1.

That is how vegan anti-milk propaganda is harmful for animals.
And, indeed, harmful for veganism.

HOW IS VEGAN ANTI-MILK PROPAGANDA HARMFUL FOR VEGANISM?

Vegan anti-milk propaganda leads ex-vegans to become animal-eaters.
Instead of milk-drinkers.

And, once ex-vegans start killing 1000 animals to eat.
Instead of just drinking milk from 1 cow.
Because they have been taught by vegan propagandists that drinking milk is as bad as eating animals.

Why not wear the leather.
Why not use chicken dung, from factory farms, and the blood and bone for fertiliser.
[As organic 'vegans' do.]
Why not go to zoos and rodeos.
Why not go hunting and fishing instead of buying beef and fish.
Why not . . .

And, so ex-vegans lose their vegan ideals completely.

Eat anything.
Wear anything.
And, just do not care anymore.

Instead of becoming lacto-vegans and keeping their ideals.

HOW IS VEGAN ANTI-MILK PROPAGANDA HARMFUL FOR PEOPLE?

About 7500 years ago there was a mutation among Europeans, that enables people to digest milk like a baby, throughout their entire lives.

Having this mutant gene has been such an evolutionary advantage, that 80% of modern Europeans, now have that mutation. Including 90% of modern Irish people.

The fact that, those with the milk-digesting genes, have almost driven those without these genes, to extinction in Ireland and Northern Europe, shows what a huge health advantage it has been to have these genes. And, use them.

Even though they were eating meat and fish, and competing with people, who were eating meat and fish, the milk-drinkers still dominated.

Which shows, what a huge evolutionary advantage, it is to be able to digest milk like a baby.

SIMILAR MILK-DIGESTING MUTATIONS

Similar milk-digesting mutations occurred among Africans, Indians and Chinese people.

Even in a low milk-drinking culture, such as China, their gene has still spread to 15% of Chinese people.

Yet, Vegan anti-milk propagandists say that, milk-drinking is unnatural, indigestible, unhealthy, and, that no-one should drink milk, after weaning from their mother's milk.

When the last 7500 years, of human history, and co-evolution with dairying, have proven otherwise.

If you cannot digest milk, then you can still probably digest yoghurt and the older matured cheeses.

If you cannot produce your own lactase, then you can add lactase to milk.

If you cannot digest cows' milk then you could try another animal's milk.

If people are concerned about modern processed milk then they could buy free-range, grass-fed milk.

If you do not want animal fat then you can drink skim milk.

CAN YOU DRINK MILK AND STILL BE A VEGAN?

Yes.
If you need to drink milk to be healthy.
As Mahatma Gandhi did.

Then you are still a vegan, because you are still keeping the vegan ideal, of not harming animals, 'in as much as it is possible and practicable'.

WHY WOULD A VEGAN DRINK COW'S MILK?

For health reasons.
Or, if there was insufficient other food available.

And, for humane reasons since, if you have to eat animal products to be healthy, then by drinking milk you are exploiting the fewest animals.

By drinking milk you exploit just 1 cow instead of eating 1000 animals.
